NOVEMBER 2025 – Days before Bloomberg News came out its Nov. 25 exclusive that Steve Witkoff coached a Russian official, the NYT was already deconstructing the “28-point plan” that Witkoff presented to Ukraine earlier that week. The Times’s 65-year-old White House Correspondent, David Sanger, wrote an immediate analysis on Nov. 22 headed “Trump Offers Ukraine Peace Plan The Kremlin Can Love”. And two days later Sanger led a three-writer team (Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Edward Wong) looking at how Marco Rubio went to Geneva and worked to amend the peace plan, which various sources described as Kremlin talking points.
Sanger joined the NYT more than 40 years ago and today is one of the news outfit’s most important and influential reporters. He remains in the White House press corps, remarkable given his experience and what he now has to tolerate in Karoline Leavitt’s press room.
The last two weeks have been historic in the American press’s capacity to report on and scrutinize the administration’s head-scratchingly one-sided actions on the Russia-Ukraine war. And Sanger’s report of Nov. 24 – though it relies on some unnamed sources – is an excellent example of quick, on-deadline reporting on the subject.
