JUNE 2025 – Barely eight weeks after the June 2021 Surfside, Florida, building collapse, The Wall Street Journal came out with a remarkable forensic of the many factors – corner-cutting and other negligence, primarily – that contributed to the disaster that killed 98. The following year, in 2022, there was no recognition of or prizes awarded to the WSJ report, which deserved better.

The report was by-lined by three reporters – Konrad Putzier, Scott Calvert and Rachael Levy – and included impressive graphical descriptions of what happened to the building.

Keep in mind that, still in the pandemic and in the aftermath of the May 2020 death of George Floyd, journalism in 2021 had plenty of subjects to focus on – in some respects, much of the press moved away from the Surfside tragedy faster than they otherwise would have. This article, though, deserves widespread recognition for its depth, technical accuracy, mix of media – and overall clarity.
