NOVEMBER 2025 – Longtime US District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf didn’t have to prepare a thoughtful public commentary about his resignation, but this weekend he did – in The Atlantic, of all places. And his statement was picked up widely by the press, including the NYT.
The Reagan-appointed judge, a fixture of the Massachusetts District, has a record of measured and impartial jurisprudence. and at age 78 he could be forgiven for simply retiring quietly. Instead, he announced his resignation so he could “speak more freely” about what’s going on in between the administration and the courts.
Judge Wolf (told the NYT) he had resigned not only to speak more freely about his own views, but also those of colleagues who were still on the bench. “I hope to be a spokesperson for embattled judges who, consistent with the code of conduct, feel they cannot speak candidly to the American people,” he said.
