FEBRUARY 2026 – The Associated Press is certainly diminished in recent years. But no matter how much some try to denigrate it today, the AP remains an old-style standard bearer among US media outlets. Amid all the seismic change in the news business, the AP, a non-profit news cooperative founded in 1846, continues to produce responsible coverage – of virtually everything. No better example of that came on the afternoon of Jan. 3, when the AP posted one of the first reports on the extraction of Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela. In it there’s plenty of phrases like “it remains unclear” and “here’s what we know, here’s what we don’t” – and there’s no speculation on what actually happened.
