JANUARY 2026 – It’s in its second year, but Frank Bruni’s year-end “Best Sentences” column is getting legs – that is, folks are liking and sharing, a lot. And for good reason: the column, a compendium of passages from (mostly) news columns across the print media. And all have been nominated by loyal readers, and originate from The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, Globe and Mail, The NYT, even Golf Week. One quote lifted from Bruni’s column:
In Golfweek, Eamon Lynch reflected on Trump’s grifting: “There was a time when it would have been scandalous for a sitting U.S. president to use the office to serve his personal business interests, but that was back when America had attorneys general who didn’t think an emoluments clause was the disclaimer on a moisturizer.” (Kelly Parden, Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Ben Scott, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.)
It’s a nice year-end celebration – a confluence of pithy comments, shared among media outlets, and shared among readers. Sure, it’s not news per se – but it’s noteworthy nonetheless that a 25-year NYT columnist creates of such an inclusive forum. Published Dec. 29:
