FEBRUARY 2026 – Days after President Trump announced the creation of a “Board of Peace” to compete with the United Nations, Washington Post columnist Max Boot produced a cogent, persuasive and powerful commentary that buried the whole idea. Never mind that Trump was trying to rake in $1 billion from any country that wanted to be a part of his club; Boot got to the essence of Trump’s latest oddball, quixotic foray into public corruption:
…whatever the superficial differences between Trump’s contemplated annexation of Greenland and his attempt to create what the invitation bills as “the most impressive and consequential Board ever assembled,” they are manifestations of the same impulse: Trump wants to do whatever he wants, wherever he wants, unconstrained by any checks or balances, and he would like to make a lot of money doing it.
Boot, like many DC commentators, at this point understands the president and his pattern of behavior, and his regular columns reflect that. This Jan. 26 piece was a quick take-down of the whole notion of a “Board of Peace” – an attempted shakedown of sovereign nations, and now, two weeks later, largely forgotten. Just as Boot predicted..
