APRIL 2026 – The Los Angeles Times has a national correspondent based in, of all places, Atlanta. But perhaps that out-of-town perch gave Jenny Jarvie the space and perspective to report on the sensitive issue of Los Angeles’s steady population decline. Her April 9th report is not an expose or assault on politicians in power – rather, it’s a broader commentary on the key trend of a high-cost, red-tape-saddled city. And that’s remarkable because few metro dailies – what’s left of them – have the inclination to take on such a tough subject. The departure of 54,000 residents from an urban county of 9.7 million may not sound like a lot, but it is the largest decline of any municipality in the country.
