FEBRUARY 2026 – The Washington Post has had a rough few weeks – it laid off 300 editorial staff to leave a newsroom of 500. But it continues to employ a handful of important voices, and it’s unlikely to fade away any time soon – unless Jeff Bezos wants it to. In late January reporters Laura Wagner and Scott Nover (both apparently still with The Post) produced a worthy update of Trump’s various legal actions against the press. Trump’s legal assault on the press has generated mixed results: He’s won against broadcast outfits, which can’t operate without FCC licenses and hence will always be vulnerable to government intimidation, especially now. But note that print outfits enjoy some independence from Trump’s retribution – he’s never gotten a financial settlement from the NYT or the WSJ, and he’s unlikely to.
